Beijing locals: How do I spend time with friends who make more money and always want to go out - play along or set boundaries?

Lucas here - São Paulo urban gardener & gig photographer visiting Beijing. My friends keep choosing expensive bars and shows; should I be upfront about money, bring homemade snacks, or wink my way into free drinks?
