Joburg volunteers-was my spontaneous shoulder rub after a long garden shift flirty or a boundary fail?

Visiting from Santiago (I paint and cook empanadas), I helped at a community garden in Joburg. After laughs and tea, I gave a tired fellow volunteer a quick shoulder rub. Felt natural to me - but should I have asked first?
