Are Manchester indie gigs ruined because they turned into a rich person's hobby?

Visiting from Miami - as a painter/photographer I adore sweaty DIY shows, but lately nights feel like boutique cocktail-art events. Is this normal Manchester vibe or are locals quietly eye-rolling?
